News From Åre Sweden

Åre Tom Kirkman

Tom Kirkman getting large on the Åre QP

I just got word from One 5 Media’s Justin Dersham who’s partaking in an epic journey across Europe & Asia to film the international mountainboard scene. He’s already stacking footy and i’m really excited to see what else is coming. Here is a quick preview of Tom Kirkman killing Åre.

Here are a few words from Justin.

Still baffled at how stoked Åre is on mtnbrding. Tom and I are being put up in a sweet little house with food taken care of. We only have 3 requirements from the resort during the next 7 days we are here…

1. Ride around in the village and hand out flyers about the demo Tom is doing on Friday. We dropped some stairs and Tom did 3s both ways and nose manny-ed a nice 15 ft deck to 4ft drop. We are scoping some handrails and grass hips as well. People have never seen the boards, I don’t speak Swedish but judging their reactions they are loving it.

2. Check what’s actually rideable and suggest where they should take beginners, intermediates and advanced riders. Today, this meant going to the absolute top of the mountain, hiking down half of it and finding a radical service road. The top was absolutely beautiful and hiking down was a blast. So green, above timberline and making our own path the whole way.

3. Instruct the local staff on how they should teach those beginners, intermediates and advanced riders. Our guide Peppe is a really class guy and he seems like he’ll have more then enough ability to get his staff trained. He was charging the service roads with a brake and yellow egg shocks. He rides an old J Lee pro model. Very cool to see that board in action still.

Overall the experience so far has been amazing. Peppe made us some Swedish meatballs tonight and they were devine. It doesn’t really get dark here so going out late won’t be too much of a problem! Tomorrow we are going to the beginner grass hill to check it out. Then do a different service road we haven’t tried. I have missed the rush of dropping in on a new hill on a mtnbrd. So much fun to get your slash on. I’ll give an update in a couple once we have laid some more riding/stoke down!

One 5 riders still mountainboard

Despite the lack of media produced by One 5 in 2009 – 2010, most of us are still riding. Rumor has it there may even be another One 5 film for 2011 with some international riding…. then again it’s just a rumor. Another rumor is Justin Dersham dropped all board sports after spending an entire winter with skiers in British Columbia.

Govies park always has and always will be the most accessible ride stop here in Denver, with a variety of drops, great grass to carve and lets not forget that long brick wallride. The wallride is my personal favorite, with a mellow bank up to the 90 degree wall and 200 feet of wall to choose from. This wall has lots of potential, I recently learned a few new tricks on it and I think more will come.

Brandon & Benton recently learned how the internet works and created a lovely little Tumblr site to post random stony thoughts, http://shlumburglars.tumblr.com. Expect to see a few more short web edit from them this session.

We all got down up in Empire last weekend for the first time since the official opening of the park when everything was muddy and almost unrideable. Photographer Dag Larson was on hand to get some shots for a photo project and had a list of things we wanted to shoot but mainly some airs on the quarter, a few sequences, and a handplant. I think we accomplished everything he wanted… I still have yet to see the final photos. Dag was kind enough to pass me a few shots.

One 5 Media’s Hot Action selected for 2010 X-Dance film festival!

I just spoke with my dear friend Mike Herbener, the eyes of One 5 Media and after months pacing back and forth in his living room anxiously awaiting a response from X-Dance he got word. X-Dance scours through thousands of action sports films each year looking for best new films of the year and this year Hot Action was one that caught the judges eyes. Mike and Justin put a lot of hours into editing the film so I had to have a heart to heart with Mike and find out how he was feeling.

E: First and foremost, how does it feel to be selected for X-Dance?

M: It’s our first major film festival, so it’s totally bitchin! Being selected for X-Dance is a huge honor.

E: Rad. What are you doing right now?

M: I’m at work right now

E: Does it hurt?

M: I like my job, so it actually doesn’t hurt that much…. I’m really hungry though.

E: Thanks Mike, enjoy the rice and bean.

M: Thank you

If your in the Salt Lake City area January 21-26 stop by the X-Dance Theatre, 272 S. Main St. and check out some of the films.

Altitude Cup

When your town is lodged deep in the valleys of Colorado’s front range you can expect you see some crazy weather and Empire is no exception to this, but we ride mountainboards which can handle just about any terrain. The second annual Altitude Cup hosted by Altitude Sickness went off! Starting Saturday morning riders found themselves greeted by some gray skies, a fresh mountainboard park waiting to be torn up and a new event format.

The Altitude Cup took some more traditional event and put a spin on them, for instance the first event of the weekend was a slalom race through cones and over one roller. The times from the slalom race determined riders gate choice in the boardcross racing. Carving is a lot of fun on a mountainboard but you could see from the way some riders were turning and hitting cones that it had been while since they had taking some hard turns. In the end we saw some unlikely candidates with the top times and the heavy favorites like Jason Lee with some slower times. Brandon Johanns, Tyler Mork and Benton Jackson all had incredibly fast times and locked in some lane choices.

All Saturday the gray skies threatened and eventually they opened up, unleashing some rain, sleet and even some snow. The rest of the days events were shut down….. so we all found ourselves at the Original Hard Rock Cafe for one of the best $5 meals i’ve ever had.

The rain continued through the night putting a damper on the camping but by 10am when riders began to get back to the Dirt Empire they were surprised to find a dry and fast boardercross course ready to be raced. The format went as followed, 2 man heats, double elimination, four man finals. Here a some photos of a few heats.

In the end Jason Lee found himself back on top, with Cole Shipp taking second and Benton Jackson respectfully holding down the third place podium spot. The finale for the weekend was the slopestyle event. With so many options and lines in the new park it was nearly impossible to fairly judge the riders on one line, besides who really wants to ride a straight jump line when you have hips, quarter pipes and jibs every where else? So it was decided that the pros would have 2 runs on the jib line which had a number options, including some rails, boxs, a rhythm jump section into a quarter pipe and skate style pyramid, 2 runs on the straight jumps line and one last big air hit on the left hand hip. The best thing about this course is that none of the jumps were intimidating and it allowed riders to push themselves and through together some technical runs.

At the end Matt Silva stayed strong and snagged up 3rd place with, some double grab backflips and some cork spins. As one of the minds behind this course design Devin Garland showed how it should be ridden putting down smooth cab 5’s and some other switch combos. No stranger to the 1st place spot was Dave Starfighter, showing that experience rules all, linking switch tricks seemlessly into to every run. Thanks again to Altitude Sickness, the town of Empire and all the sponsor MBS, Hillbilly Dirt Gear, AP Production and that fly ass tv show host (call me).
